Chrome Passes Safari in Browser Share
An analysis by StatCounter found Monday that that Google's Chrome browser has passed Apple's Safari as the third most popular browser within the United States.
In a survey of 874 million Web page views for June 21 to June 27 across three million Web sites, Chrome picked up 8.97 percent of the page views, versus Apple's Safari, with 8.88 percent. StatCounter said that Internet Explorer still remained the dominant browser with 52 percent, followed by Mozilla's Firefox with 28.5 percent.

Microsoft Pakistan Launhes Computer Literacy Programme
To bridge the digital divide in Pakistan, Microsoft has started computer literacy programmes to equip the people with technology skills, said Marketing Lead, Microsoft, Shoaib Khalil. Briefing media, he said, Microsoft had initiated a larger programme to train the locals in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Microsoft is also providing training to the local private sector and working close with academia under the same objective. IT&T Gets Rs. 718 Mln for Development in 2010-11
The government has allocated an amount of Rs 718.317 million for ongoing and new schemes for Information Technology & Telecom sector under Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the Year 2010-11.
As per details of the allocation for different projects ongoing projects, Rs 60 million have been allocated for Federal Govt Data Center & Intranet at Islamabad. Another Rs 50 million have been allocated for application of E-Office (Basic Common Applications at all divisions of the federal govt.).

Qubee, a UK-based Augere company is told as ready to launch its services officially in Pakistan. Since its soft launch in October 2009, Qubee has secured 1,500 WiMAX customers in Karachi.

Nokia to run Yahoo's maps in global partnership
Nokia Corp. will run mapping and navigation services for Yahoo Inc. in an acknowledgement that the slumping Internet company hasn't kept up with rival Google Inc. in the increasingly important area of location services.
Yahoo will, in turn, provide e-mail and instant messaging services on Nokia phones, as part of the worldwide partnership announced Monday.

Microsoft to end support for Windows 2000, XP SP2 July 13
Microsoft offers support for its products for five years and extended support for another five years. That time will soon be up for Windows 2000 (desktop and server) and Windows XP SP2: July 13 is the last day that extended support will be available.
According to Microsoft, self-help online support (such as Microsoft online Knowledge Base articles, FAQs, troubleshooting tools, and other resources) will be available for at least a year longer. But paid support, support assistance, and security updates will be discontinued on July 13.
Clearwire's 2 New WiMax 4G Smartphones for 2010 to be Self-Branded
Clearwire had announced that it will be bringing two additional 4G WiMax smartphones to US, and it is now known that the devices will appear under Clearwire's branding. Clearwire, of which Sprint owns a majority of the company, shares its 4G network with Sprint. The devices that were announced were not given any details other than the fact that one is to be made by Samsung and the other to be made by HTC.
For its part, Sprint has already announced that it will launch the HTC EVO 4G this summer--that device will be branded by HTC and Sprint.
Fake Anti-Virus Software, A Growing Threat
Fake anti-virus software that infect PCs with malicious code are a growing threat, according to a study by Google.
Its analysis of 240m web pages over 13 months showed that fake anti-virus programs accounted for 15% of all malicious software.
Scammers trick people into downloading programs by convincing them that their PC is infected with a virus.
Once installed, the software may steal data or force people to make a payment to register the fake product.
“Surprisingly, many users fall victim to these attacks and pay to register the fake [anti-virus software],” the study said.
Rhapsody for iPhone gets offline playlists
Subscription-based music service Rhapsody on Monday morning released a new version of its iPhone app that offers offline playback, allowing you to play playlists even when you don't have an Internet connection.
The Rhapsody app is free, but you'll need a subscription, which costs $10 a month (it recently lowered prices) for one device or $15 a month for up to three.

Sony to begin worldwide 3D TV launch in June

Asustek unveils its first e-reader, the DR-900
Netbook pioneer Asustek Computer unveiled its first e-reader, the DR-900, at the Cebit electronics show going on now in Hanover, Germany. The device has a thin, 9-inch screen and includes Wi-Fi.
The DR-900 comes with a thin, 9-inch e-reader screen and includes Wi-Fi and optional 3G wireless connectivity, the company said in a statement. The e-reader is designed to ensure the batteries can last through 10,000 page turns, or around 20 or 30 novels, on a single charge.
Nintendo DSi XL to launch March 28
Nintendo plans to launch the latest version of its popular handheld video game system, the DSi XL, on March 28 in North America.
The XL will cost $190. It will have two screens like its predecessors, but as the name suggests, the device and screens will be much larger than the currently available versions. The XL is already available in Japan.
Nintendo Co. also says it's launching "Super Mario Galaxy 2" for the Wii console on May 23 and "Metroid: Other M" on June 27.
In addition, Nintendo will sell e-books, namely "100 Classic Books," for the DS portable devices for $20. The 100 works will include pieces from such authors as William Shakespeare, Jules Verne, Jane Austen and Mark Twain. "100 Classic Books" launches June 14.
Latest modern affliction: "Text neck"
Texting is the new form of communication and it's here to say. But if you feel worse physically the more you text, you could be suffering from "text neck," reports CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami.
Possible problems associated with "text neck" include:
- headaches
- neck pain
- shoulder pain
- gastrointestinal issues
- loss of lung capacity
- pinched nerve
- spine degeneration
So what should somebody with "text neck" do? Dr. Fishman says back realignment and four special exercises. Also, remember to lift your phone up and text at eye level rather than leaning over your phone.
YouTube to Filter Sex, Violence, Foul Language
YouTube today new content filter that helps users screen out offensive content, such as news videos with graphic violence, or sexually suggestive clips that don't exceed the service's Community Guidelines. The optional filter, named Safety Mode, also hides all text comments by default.
Google's YouTube has long banned family-unfriendly content, including pornography and videos that show gratuitous violence, animal abuse, underage drinking, and the like. But Safety Mode adds another layer of protection to keep kids and sensitive adults away from more provocative material.
